Homily

The General Instruction of the Roman Missal says “the homily is part of the Liturgy and is strongly recommended, for it is necessary for the nurturing of the Christian life.” [GIRM #65] the homily is the time for the preacher to “help people make connections between the realities of their lives and the realities of the gospel” [Fulfilled in Your Hearing #19] The homilist’s task is to “break open” the scriptures to the assembly. Just as the composers of the letters of the New Testament needed to address certain attitudes or problems, today’s preaching must also remind us of the teachings of Jesus and how we can be more Christian in our daily living.
